Christmas Fun in Merthyr Tydfil
Nothing says Christmas more than getting together with friends and family.
And this year, even more celebrations are in order, since last year’s lockdowns meant we couldn’t meet up or go anywhere for our festive entertainment.
Thankfully, we can once again celebrate the season and get into the spirit as usual – and there’s no better place to do it than Merthyr Tydfil.
The town centre is hosting a day full of festive fun, brought to you by The Big Heart of Merthyr Tydfil, St Tydfil Shopping Centre and Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council.
On Saturday, November 13, the town centre will be filled with music, Christmas entertainment, and all sorts of other great stuff to see and do.
Then, after a jam-packed day of getting hyped up, it’s time to get cosy in your home, make a hot chocolate, and watch the stunning light switch-on via a live stream on Facebook with Capital FM and Love Island winner Liam Reardon.
If that wasn’t enough to get you excited for the big day, St Tydfil Shopping Centre is also hosting a Christmas market on November 27 and December 11.
It’s a great opportunity to support local and independent sellers, and pick up some thoughtful gifts that your family and friends will love.
So, to kick off the celebrations and begin the Christmas countdown, here’s everything you can expect from the town centre’s day of festive cheer.
Meet Santa’s elves
As Christmas comes closer, there’s only one way to check if your kids have been naughty or nice.
Two of Santa’s elves will be bringing their ‘Goodometer’ to Merthyr Tydfil’s town centre on the day of the event, where children of all ages will be able to find out if their behaviour has been good enough this year.
It’s easy and fun to check – children just have to place a hand underneath the infrared scanner at the front of the elves’ sleigh.
Then, using the most up-to-date elf technology, the machine will detect if their behaviour has been good, borderline or naughty, complete with flashing light-up presents.
The comedic elves are ready for anything and will be able to keep the whole family entertained, no matter what the outcome is, and lots of laughs are guaranteed.
A host of festive entertainment
From 11am – 4pm, you’ll be able to catch some festive and fun performances.
For example, singing nuns may not be the first thing you think about when it comes to Christmas, but don’t let that stop you from enjoying the song stylings of Musical Ruth.
The all-singing nun and her magical mobile piano, who found fame on Britain’s Got Talent, will be putting on a fantastic show packed with singalong Christmas tunes, games, and so much more.
As mad as they come, Ruth knows a thing or two about entertainment and her live stint will have people of all ages laughing and joining in with songs, dances and games.
You’ll also be able to catch the talented stilt walkers, the Christmas Candy girls, and get your picture taken with them.
Watch the town light up
But the festive cheer doesn’t stop there. As it gets dark outside, you can stay warm inside the house and head to Facebook, where there’ll be a live stream of Merthyr Tydfil’s Christmas lights being switched on.
In partnership with Capital FM, the stunning light switch-on is an exciting sign that Christmas is well and truly on its way.
Join hosts Josh and Kally as they chat to Santa himself, finding out how the planning is going for the big day, and taking calls from listeners to find out what they want for Christmas.
With a special guest appearance from Love Island winner Liam Reardon, the exciting event is sure to be hugely entertaining.
And, even though it’s taking place virtually, it’s a great way to signal the start of the season and begin the festivities.
More information about the live stream will be available on our Facebook event page here.
